The initial rea�arch and developm,eut .(Phase One) of
thl• project baa been completed. Thia phase waa carried
out uaing mainly local resources and trials have now been
completed which demonstrate that niuaael• have excellent
growt:h rate and are highly acceptable to local consumers.
The spat for culture ia ■till imported froa Tahiti because,
although it has been found that the mussels will apaWD in
Samoa waters, further res•arc.h and developatent is neceaaary
to eatabliab • ay1t• of apat eollectioa.
The 1'iaheries Diviaion h.aa prepared• long-term proposal
for the development of muaael culture over· five years. The first
phase of research has been completed. The accond phase is
to train district wo11141n'• committees in suitable areas to
cultivate the .1111.1asels on raft-suspended ropes. The third
phase 11 to expand production to a larger �nd JAOre
connercialiaed basis with a poa■ible e.xporc orientation,
involviog individual grower■, who may include women who
participated in the second phase of the project. To implement
the second phase of the project external funding ia required.

Western Samoa.
3. PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To provide materials and co-ordinating aervicea and training
two diatrict women•a connittee project for cultivation of
introduced Philippine Green Mussel (Perna viridia). The
project aim• to provide an income generating opportunity to
village women and at the same time increase production of
nutritious locally arovth protein food.
