Abstract: Prepared by the SOPAC Secretariat for the Pacific Islands Regional Ocean Forum held in early 2004 at the University of the South Pacific, this report summarises the major areas of work conducted by SOPAC. These include: maritime boundaries delimitation; research into deep sea non-living marine resources; nearshore non-living resources (aggregates); mapping and monitoring coastal areas; monitoring and observing the open ocean; modelling using complex oceanographic and meteorological datasets; observing the hydrological cycle (HYCOS); desalination; coastal water quality; ocean-based renewable energy resources; environmental vulnerability; natural hazards; capacity building; resource economics; and data and knowledge management (dynamic mapping). For each of these areas an explanation of relevant issues, their current status and an account of how the issues are being addressed is given.

Using GIS in human impact analysis of mangroves
Author(s):Davis, B.E., Quinn, N.
Year: 2004
ISSN: 1013-9877|1726-0787
Notes: South Pacific Journal of Natural Science, 22, 1-11
Held at: USP
ASFA Subject(s): Environment management, Industrialization, Urbanization, Ecosystem management, Coastal zone management, Man-induced effects, GIS, Mangroves
Abstract: A GIS approach was developed to provide ground-level classification of mangrove communities and their impact by humans. Mangroves around Suva are declining due to peripheral pressures from expanding land use and interior pressures of increased resource utilization. Increasing urbanisation, particularly growth of industrialisation and squatter settlements, has resulted in greater utilisation of mangrove communities (Rhizophora - Bruguiera). Better information is needed if sustainable environmental management practices are to succeed. Remote sensing is unable to provide the detail and scale of data that is required, but in situ field work, combined with GIS approaches, offers an enhanced methodology. This project examines the mangroves of the Suva peninsula using a geographical information system (GIS) approach in order to derive better techniques for monitoring, analysing and managing these deteriorating environments.
