Abstract: Coral bleaching is a global phenomenon that seems to be increasing in frequency, scale and severity. The South Pacific experienced a major mass bleaching event in 2000. The causes and effects of coral bleaching and the 2000 event and smaller bleaching episodes in Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands since are discussed. In Fiji, the corals appear hardy; where high mortality occurred, relatively unaffected areas have provided a source of recruitment. Fish and invertebrate populations do not appear to have been affected. Scenarios for the future of coral reefs include progressive loss, replacement of species by more resistant ones, and increased species diversity through reef renewal. Several institutions researching the phenomenon in Fiji are named.
