Women, marine awareness and marine conservation in Samoa Author(s):Skelton, P.A., South, G.R. Publisher: USP Marine Studies Programme Year: 1997 ISSN: 1018-2896 Held at: USP|PNG GEN-EN,SK-1997 ASFA Subject(s): Women, Resource conservation, Marine fisheries Abstract: Marine awareness and the related topic of conservation are important concepts in the sustainable development of marine resources. In all sustainable strategies, the role of women has been universally declared. In this context the author discusses the various objectives listed in the national environment and development strategies of Samoa. Similar to many Pacific island countries, women and subsistence fishery are significantly interlinked in Samoa. Women are involved in decision making procedures and processes at local village level. Hence the author argues that awareness of sustainable marine resource management amongst women in Samoa is very essential. He therefore lists various recommendations. Control No.: 00013180.nul
