Abstract: Vibrios and related microorganisms are an important source of infection, both in temperate and tropical waters. Many of these organisms can survive in seawater and freshwater without a host, particularly in areas of high sewage outfall. In addition, these organisms can be accumulated by bivalve molluscs and if eaten raw or semi-cooked, can pose a serious health threat. Water temperature may also be an important factor, as vibrios of medical importance tend to be more prevalent in tropical than temperate waters. Brackish waters may support the growth of vibrios, an area which can also support the growth of bivalve molluscs. This article outlines the taxonomy, isolation and identification of vibrio-type microorganisms and examines the possible implications of these organisms in aquatic tropical and semi-tropical regions.
