Abstract: Parrotfishes are one of the most abundant fishes found on coral reefs. They are of crucial functional importance as grazers and bio-eroders in the reef ecosystem, removing algal material from reef surfaces, preventing overgrowth of scleractinian corals and other sessile animals and redistributing up to 1000 kg of calcareous sediment per individual per year. In the Solomon Islands, certain species of parrotfish have long been highly prized food fish and large numbers are now harvested for export to neighbouring markets for the live reef food fish trade. The decline or removal of parrotfishes from reef ecosystems can have enormous and catastrophic consequences, ultimately affecting local fishers and tourism operators.
