Abstract: The global marine aquarium trade has become a billion dollar industry, creating costs and benefits for the countries where ornamental species are collected. This workshop was held to determine the capacity of Pacific island countries to manage the marine ornamentals trade on a sustainable basis. The status of coral reefs and the nature, extent and history of the marine ornamentals trade in the Pacific region are outlined. Country reports from Fiji, the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands, Palau, Vanuatu, American Samoa and the Marshall Islands provide more detail on these nations. Best management practices for coral reef ecosystems, collecting for the aquarium trade and associated activities, such as ecotourism, community-based governance and coral reef restoration, are discussed. The application of the Convention on the Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) treaty to coral reef species and the role of governments in the regulation of the marine aquarium industry concludes the report.
