Evaluation of the potential for aquaculture in Samoa Author(s):Rimmer, M., Trevor, A., Lober, M., Bell, L. Publisher: GRM International Year: 2001 Notes: Samoa Fisheries Project, an AusAID - assisted project of the Fisheries Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Forests, Fisheries & Meteorology -- t.p|Samoa Fisheries Project milestone 40 -- t.p. Held at: Samoa|USP ASFA Subject(s): Introduced species, Endemic species, Aquaculture development Abstract: This report is an outcome of Aquaculture Assessment of Local Species component of the Samoa Fisheries Project. The potential for aquaculture development of Samoa’s indigenous flora and fauna was assessed by reviewing information on endemic species, and on other species that support aquaculture industries in the Asia-Pacific region. Visits were made to a range of sites on Upolu and Savai’i with a view to identifying specific sites that could be used for grow-out trials, as well as providing recommendations on potential aquaculture development at these sites. Small-scale trials were undertaken at several sites on Upolu and Savai’i, involving mud crab farming in cages; transplantation of bivalve molluscs; and a survey for any remnant populations of redclaw. Recommendations for further work with these and other species are provided. Control No.: 00013491.nul

A Review of the Coastal Fisheries Programme: conducted for the Secretariat of the Pacific Community Author(s):Cartwright, I., Ledua, E., Gillett, R. Publisher: Gillett, Preston & Associates; Thalassa Consulting Year: 2003 Notes: July 2003 -t.p. ASFA Subject(s): Research programmes, Fishery development, Aquaculture development Identifiers: Secretariat of the Pacific Community. Coastal Fisheries Programme Abstract: The Coastal Fisheries Programme of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community was reviewed in mid-2003. The review team visited SPC headquarters in Noumea and met a variety of stakeholders in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea. Telephone interviews were also conducted. The CFP was found to be generally effective in its mission to optimise the value of small-scale fisheries and aquatic resource use in Pacific Island waters. All six sections of the CFP appeared to be making good progress towards meeting their established objectives. Major findings were that more assistance was needed to increase fisheries management capacity of agencies; economic analysis capabilities were also low; and that CFP’s links and communications with countries had weakened, with many stakeholders unaware of the range of CFP services available to them. Fourteen major recommendations were made to address these and other issues identified by the review. Control No.: 00012810.nul
