Mangrove-associated algae in Fiji

ASFA Subject(s): Community composition, Biological surveys, Mangrove swamps, Algae
Abstract: Macroscopic algae epiphytic on mangrove pneumatophores were surveyed from two climatically contrasting mangrove communities in the Ba and Rewa River mangrove swamps on Viti Levu, Fiji. Seventeen taxa, including 13 Rhodophyta, 2 Phaeophyta and 2 Chlorophyta were recorded. The most frequently occurring species is Dictyota bartayresiana, followed by Chlorodesmis hildenbrandtii and Caloglossa leprieurii. Two genera normally associated with mangroves in other regions were absent in Fiji: Catenella and Murrayella. Compared with other studies in the Indo-West Pacific region, Fiji has the lowest number of mangrove-associated algae and a greatly reduced number of mangrove species. On a localized scale, however, variations in climatic conditions (between Ba and Rewa) do not seem to affect the associated algal epiflora, and no mangrove host-specificity is apparent.

A preliminary checklist of the benthic marine algae of the Samoan archipelago
Author(s): Skelton, P.A., South, G.R.
Publisher: USP Marine Studies Programme

ISSN: 1018-2896

ASFA Subject(s): Seaweeds, Check lists
Abstract: A total of 198 taxa of marine algae are listed from previously published works spanning the mid-19th century to the early 1920s. The taxa comprise 15 Cyanophyceae, 89 Rhodophyceae, 33 Phaeophyceae and 60 Chlorophyceae. Each entry includes taxonomic name (updated to current nomenclature), synonyms and misapplied names, with original citations given. Specific reference is made to Samoan records. This probably represents no more than 60 per cent of the actual flora based on available lists of the Fiji Islands and French Polynesia. Included are 26 species for which the Samoan islands are the type locality (13 per cent of the currently known flora). A number of these species may be endemic to the archipelago. A brief historical overview of phycological research in the archipelago is given. A list of references, index to genera and species and endnotes are also included.

Women, marine awareness and marine conservation in Samoa
Author(s): Skelton, P.A., South, G.R.
Publisher: USP Marine Studies Programme
Year: 1997
ISSN: 1018-2896
Held at: USP|PNG GEN-EN,SK-1997
ASFA Subject(s): Women, Resource conservation, Marine fisheries
Abstract: Marine awareness and the related topic of conservation are important concepts in the sustainable development of marine resources. In all sustainable strategies, the role of women has been universally declared. In this context the author discusses the various objectives listed in the national environment and development strategies of Samoa. Similar to many Pacific island countries, women and subsistence fishery are significantly interlinked in Samoa. Women are involved in decision making procedures and processes at local village level. Hence the author argues that awareness of sustainable marine resource management amongst women in Samoa is very essential. He therefore lists various recommendations.
