Abstract:
The edible aroids, taro Colocasia esculenta L Schott and tannia Xanthosoma sagittifolium L Schott are important food crops of the wet tropics. Colocasia esculenta contains two distinct botanical varieties, dasheen var. esculenta and eddoe var. antiquorum. Although grown in the wet tropics, these aroids often have to tolerate internittent drought during the growing season. Glasshouse experiments were conducted to study the responses of these aroids to water stress, and evaluate the effects of potassium K supply on growth and plant water-relations.
